Getting Started


Getting started is easy.  You will need a
resume and a cover letter.  Once you interview be sure to send a thank-you note.  (Samples are included below in MS Word 5 and 6 format that you may download and personalize.)  Be sure to check out the interview tips as well.  If you need additional assistance contact one of the entities offering resume help from the list below.

Interview Tips

Before the interview:

  • Learn about the organization.

  • Have a specific job or jobs in mind.

  • Review your qualifications for the job.

  • Prepare answers to broad questions about yourself.

  • Review your resume.

  • Practice an interview with a friend or relative.

  • Arrive before the scheduled time of your interview.

Information to bring to your interview:

  • Social Security number.  
  • Driver's license number.
  • Resume. Although not all employers require applicants to bring a resume, you should be able to furnish the interviewer with information about your education, training, and previous employment.
  • Usually an employer requires three references. Get permission from people before using their names, and make sure they will give you a good reference. Try to avoid using relatives. For each reference, provide the following information: Name, address, telephone number, and job title.

Personal appearance:

  • Be well groomed.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • Do not chew gum or smoke.

During the interview:

  • Answer each question concisely.

  • Respond promptly.

  • Use good manners. Learn the name of your interviewer and shake hands as you meet.

  • Use proper English and avoid slang.

  • Be cooperative and enthusiastic.

  • Ask questions about the position and the organization.

  • Thank the interviewer, and follow up with a letter.

Test (If employer administers one):

  • Listen closely to instructions.
  • Read each question carefully.
  • Write legibly and clearly.
  • Budget your time wisely and don't dwell on one question.
